What is a taxable supply for GST purposes?

Understand what a taxable supply is and why it matters for GST.

Summary

A taxable supply is a sale of goods, services or other things that has GST included in the price. Only businesses registered for GST make taxable supplies, and GST does not apply to every sale.

What this means

For a supply to be a taxable supply, it generally needs to be made for consideration, in the course of an enterprise, connected with Australia, and made by an entity that is registered or required to be registered for GST. The supply must also not be GST-free or input taxed.

GST-free supplies (such as most basic foods and some health and education services) do not have GST included, but the seller can still claim GST credits on related purchases. Input taxed supplies (such as residential rent and financial services) do not have GST added, and the seller generally cannot claim GST credits on related purchases. Whether a supply is taxable, GST-free or input taxed affects both the invoice and BAS.

Typical actions

  • Confirm whether your business is registered or required to be registered for GST.
  • For each sale, work out whether it is taxable, GST-free or input taxed.
  • Ensure invoices for taxable supplies meet tax invoice requirements.
  • Report GST amounts correctly on your BAS.
  • Speak with a registered tax agent for complex or mixed supplies.
