What is the difference between a tax refund and a tax bill?

Understand why some people get a tax refund and others receive a tax bill after lodging.

Summary

A tax refund arises when the tax withheld or paid during the year is more than the tax assessed on your return. A tax bill arises when the amount already paid was less than the assessed tax.

What this means

The ATO calculates your final tax based on the tax return you lodge. Amounts already paid during the year — usually through PAYG withholding from your employer or PAYG instalments — are then compared with the final assessed amount.

If more was paid than assessed, the difference is refunded. If less was paid than assessed, you receive a bill for the balance. Bills often arise where you have income no tax was withheld from, such as investment income, or where you had multiple jobs. Both outcomes are normal parts of the tax system.

Typical actions

  • Review your Notice of Assessment carefully.
  • If a refund is due, confirm your bank details with the ATO are up to date.
  • If tax is owed, note the payment due date to avoid interest.
  • If you consistently receive large refunds or bills, review your PAYG withholding.
  • Consider whether reviewing your PAYG withholding or PAYG instalments during the year may help reduce future shortfalls or overpayments.
